Salt on the Pavement: Documenting Place, People, and the British Coast
(NLPG-00880776-V2-UN-20261002)

Salt on the Pavement is a documentary photography and film project by Shane Coles exploring the people, places and changing identities of England’s seaside towns.

Travelling through six coastal locations, the project will document residents, workers, visitors, businesses and the everyday life that exists beyond the familiar image of the British seaside.

Documenting coastal life — Shane filming and interviewing a working fisherman using a two-camera setup

A travelling gallery

A converted motorhome will become a mobile photography exhibition, taking the work directly onto seafronts and promenades.

Photographs, documentary footage, artist talks and live Q&As will create a temporary gallery space within the communities being documented.

Artist talk on the beach — Public discussion beside the touring motorhome, with audiences seated in deck chairs.

Touring photography gallery — The motorhome exhibition presenting large-format photography directly on the seafront.

Mobile documentary exhibition — The opposite side of the motorhome showing a built-in documentary screen alongside photographic works.

Workshops and participation

Photography workshops with students, young people and community groups will explore documentary photography, visual storytelling and ways of recording place.

Photography workshop — Shane leading a participatory photography workshop with young people in a gallery setting.

Photography, film and print

The final project will include a photographic series, documentary film, touring exhibition, gallery presentations and a printed zine.

Final exhibition visualisation — A concept image showing how Salt on the Pavement could be presented in a gallery setting, combining large-scale coastal photographs, a documentary projection and an ice cream cart installation that also distributes zines. With sand brought into the space, the exhibition imagines the atmosphere of the seaside transported indoors, blending photography, film, print and installation into one immersive environment.

Photographs. Places. People. Stories.

Images shown are concept visualisations of the proposed touring exhibition and workshop programme.
